My name is James Howard Steele, Jr. I am a Tribal Council Member, Alee district. I have been on the Tribal Council since January 2004. I decided to run for Tribal Council because I wanted to be a positive influence. I grew up in Arlee, have since 1986. In addition to this job, I have been an Alternative Resource Specialist and a Detention Officer. My Tribal affiliation is Salish. I have helped the Tribes with the annual report and with the purchase of Tribal land. In my spare time I go walking, fishing, hunting, camping and to the movies. My fondest memories are of helping take care my grandparents and helping them out. Independent best describes my political beliefs. I am single and raising one child. The former Tribal Council Member I most admire is Jamie Howard Steele Sr., dad. I look to elders, lawyers and family for advice. In 10 to 20 years, I would like to see the Tribes owning all of the land on the Reservation and that people all have jobs. I believe the two important issues facing the Tribes today are cultural languages and economic development. Outside the Tribes, the biggest allies are the government and other native Tribes. One of the biggest issues I have had to deal with as a Tribal Council member has been economic development. One of my biggest personal achievements has been receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science. I would like people to know that I like the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Grizzlies, and Two Eagle River School. My future goals are to finish my work in public administration, get a graduate degree and do the best job I can for Tribal people. A future leader should be able to listen, study the issues, communicate and ask good questions. I support Tribal youth and their education as a Two Eagle River School board member. I donate, help [with] fundraisers and try to support youth. My advice for youth is to finish school and enjoy the years of youth because you’re only young for a short time.
